Bruce Karim

Painting. Movement.
Material transformation.

Ugandan-Swedish multidisciplinary artist based in Stockholm, working across painting, mixed media, creative reuse, dance and performance.

I make work about being seen, finding a voice and claiming a place to belong.

Selected work

A practice in motion.

Sound of Freedom, Bruce Karim’s large-scale painting.

Sound of Freedom

A five-by-five-metre painting created through movement and rhythm, with my body becoming part of the painting process.

The Untouchable No-1: a lioness and a woman’s face in layered colour.

The Untouchable

A lion portrait exploring feminine strength, protection and freedom. Colour and a direct gaze bring vulnerability and defiance together.

RISE UP

Painting becomes performance.

Live painting, movement, sound and silence meet in RISE UP. The work explores identity, Black representation and the desire to be seen and heard.

Commissions & collaborations

From a conversation to something tangible.

I bring painting, material exploration and movement into projects developed for particular places, audiences and shared questions.

My experience includes commissioned paintings, public art, live performance and creative work with schools and communities. I work with artists, cultural organisations and partners to develop projects from an initial conversation through to production and presentation.

Artistic research in development

Still Arriving

I am Ugandan-Swedish. When I return to Uganda, I am seen as a foreigner. In Sweden, I experience that same distance. I belong to both places, yet I feel like an outsider in both.

Still Arriving grows from this lived experience. Through developing paintings, mixed media and material research, I explore identity, documents and the space between knowing who you are and how others recognise your belonging.

Dance & movement

The body is part of the work.

Dance is a living part of my multidisciplinary practice, connecting performance, teaching and creative exchange. Alongside my visual work, I lead dance workshops and teach at Solna Kulturskola.

Rise & Change

Creating space for others.

I founded Rise & Change because sharing creativity is part of my artistic life.

Through our programme Trygga rum för barn och unga, we create opportunities for children and young people to explore art, dance, movement, storytelling and creative reuse in schools and community settings.

There is space to experiment, contribute ideas and discover a personal way of expressing yourself.

About / CV

Art grows from lived experience.

I work across painting, mixed media, reclaimed materials, dance and performance. My experience includes public commissions, exhibitions, teaching and creative exchange in Sweden and internationally.

Through painting, reclaimed materials and live performance, I bring strength and vulnerability into the same space. A discarded object becomes part of a portrait. Movement leaves its mark on a surface. The audience encounters both the artwork and the person creating it.

My practice extends across exhibitions, public commissions, performance and creative exchange. I work independently and collaboratively, bringing my visual and movement practice into dialogue with artists, cultural organisations and communities.

Let’s create something together.
